Pronounced “Bratch” Bratč is only seven nautical miles from Split as the crow flies. From a touristic point of view, the island is best known for the white-pebble beach Zlatni Rat. These gleaming white pebbles have formed over eons from the same white stone that is used to build the walls of many of the island’s buildings. Covering an area of 396 square kilometres, it is the largest island off the Dalmatian coast and the third largest in the Adriatic. The island also boasts the highest point of all the Adriatic islands with Vidova gora, which stands 780 m above sea level.
Its population of 14,000 makes it the most populous of the Adriatic islands. The main town is Supetar but there are communities of various sizes dotted across the island. The island’s history is deep and rich. Archaeologists have found the earliest evidence of human habitation in Croatia in the Kopačina cave near Donji Humac dating to the 12th millennium BCE. Later layers of history include Greek, Roman, Saracen, Venetian, Hungarian, French. The island was also occupied by the Italian troops during WW2 and then by German troops. However, this was not for long and being part of Croatia, Brač became part of Yugoslavia until 1991 when it became independent.
