The island of Mljet is a jewel in the Adriatic Archipelago crown. The most southerly and easterly of the larger islands of Croatia, at 98sq km it is about two thirds of it remains forested. Indeed, one third of the forest is a national park and to protect its pristine environment visitors must pay an entry fee and follow specific rules.
With only one main road, running like a backbone along the length of the island, it is a great place to explore by bicycle. There are also two lakes on the island – Malo Jezero and Veliko Jezero (Small Lake and Great Lake), perfect for kayaking. There is a small island in the larger lake, which is home to a Benedictine monastery and a church. Gastronomically, Mljet’s cuisine is typical of the region, making the most of the Mediterranean produce such as olives, seafood, and fish, as well as fruit and vegetables.
If you are an aficionado of Speleology, Mljet is the place for you. If you’re wondering what this means… it is the study of exploration of caves. Mljet is proud of its many caves, the most famous one being Odyssey’s Cave. There are also the Ostasevica and Morvica caves, which can be found within the mountain at the centre of the island.
