Pula

Pula is the largest city in Istria County and with a population of about 57,500 it is the eighth large city in Croatia. Pula has a long and rich history of wine making, fishing and ship building, but is best known for is its wealth of ancient Roman architecture. Of these, the most spectacular is the Pula arena, an amphitheatre that was built between 27 BCE and CE 68. There is evidence of Bronze Age settlements and a remarkable million years ago, homo erectus in the nearby cave of Šandalja.
Pula is built on and around seven hills, and its port is reached via a large, deep gulf.
As with the rest of Croatia, Pula has been subject to various rulers, most significantly the Venetians, Napoleonic, early Hapsburg, and Austro-Hungarian. These too have left their mark on this attractive city, as did Italy and Germany and subsequent bombing during WW2.
The weather in Pula is mild and very sunny with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine every year. The region experiences winds at different times of year, making it ideal for sailing. In the winter, the Bora brings cold and clear weather from the north, while the Sirocco, blowing from the south, brings rain in summer. The Maestral [Mistral] on the other hand, is a summer breeze blowing from the inland to the sea.
