Unlike the long, narrow Croatian islands to the east and south, Vis is quite round. It is also the farthest island from the Croatian coast. Formed from some of the oldest rock in the Adriatic, the island has some extraordinary geography, including coastal caves and land formations. In terms of area, it covers an area of 90.26 square kilometres.
A truly beautiful island, the small population once relied on fishing and later, while part of Yugoslavia, it became an important naval base, many buildings of which remain. In 2017 the movie, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was filmed on location on Vis. Then, in 2019, UNESCO established GEOPARK Vis archipelago. Nowadays its income mainly comes from agriculture and tourism.
Vis is one of the perfect islands for gulet charter, yacht charter and sailing holidays. On Vis there are many beaches, including Srebarna, Milna, Zaglav, Stoncica and Stiniva, each of which has an excitingly different feature. For example, Stiniva has a rather unusual entrance; a narrow passage that cuts through high cliffs from the sea.
