Athens

Historic Athens is the bustling capital of Greece that lies at the heart of western civilization. The city is also home to Piraeus, the largest passenger port in Europe and the second largest in the world. Europe’s oldest capital, brimming over some of the finest ancient ruins in the western world, it is also a busy modern city.

The name Athens comes from Athena, the goddess of wisdom, handicrafts and warfare, a rather intriguing job description these days. Athens has a recorded history dating back more than 3,000 years and at the heart of the ancient city are some of the worlds most treasured buildings, particularly the Acropolis of Athens, which includes the Parthenon among other important buildings, Mount Lycabettos, the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Athens has a rich cultural heritage with an abundance of museums, galleries and theatres that are well worth exploring.

Athens is also one of only 11 cities to host the Olympic Games twice. The first time was in 1896 and just over a century later it hosted the 2004 Olympics.
