Hydra

The Greek island of Hydra is postcard perfect. As no cars are permitted on the island, apart from garbage trucks, ambulances, and fire trucks, the 3000 strong population either walks or travels around by donkey or boat. Located in the Argo-Saronic Gulf, the island has a long history, and was once well known for its ship building.

The narrow lanes and many elegant, stone mansions, together with the relaxed car-free atmosphere makes Hydra a charming, timeless destination, yet it has every mod-con and is conveniently close to Athens.

Hydra is two hours by hydrofoil from Piraeus, 30 minutes from Ermioni and 20 minutes from Metochi. The island’s beauty is inspirational and has always appealed to “the beautiful people.” Two very famous residents were Sophia Loren and Leonard Cohen.
