The island of Patmos is small, but its rich spiritual past and religious significance gives the island an enchanting atmosphere. Throughout the centuries, Patmos continues to be an important destination for Christian pilgrims as, they believe that the Apostle John was inspired by God to write the Book of Revelation (the Apocalypse) in a cave on the island. As a result, the island has multiple monasteries, of which the Monastery of St John is considered to be one of the most important religious centres in Greece.
Patmos has delightfully little tourism infrastructure, especially for mass-tourism, so for those who wish to escape the crowds it is an ideal place to relax, trek and re-energize. There are some 15 beaches on the island, many of which are pleasantly quiet, even during the summer months.
Three remote and sparsely inhabited islands, which are totally undeveloped for tourism, are the tiny islands of Agathonisi, the northernmost of the Dodecanese, and Arki and Marathi, which have a daily boat connection to Patmos.
Patmos is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list since 1999.
There is no airport on Patmos. The most popular ferries to Patmos are from Kos, Piraeus (Athens), Samos and Rhodes.
Patmos is in the Dodecanese and perfect island for yacht charter itinerary.
