As well as being the largest island in the Dodecanese archipelago, the historic island of Rhodes is also one of the most popular destinations in Greece.
Rhodes has a rich history dating back many millennia and there are many ruins from the Hellenic and Classical antiquity. The island has several iconic sites that have become very famous, including the old town of Rhodes, the elegant Italian inspired Kallithea and arguably the most well-known of all, Lindos. But these are, in fact, just a few of the beautiful historic places worth visiting.
Rhodes town is busy but there are quiet backstreets to explore. The town is small and great for shopping, exploring, eating and people watching (there are many excellent cafés and restaurants to choose from). There are plenty of taxis of course, but walking is the main (and best) way to get around, so remember to wear comfortable shoes.
About halfway down the eastern coast is the picturesque town of Lindos, with its classically whitewashed houses covering the hillside almost all the way to the top where in pride of place stands the majestic Lindos Acropolis.
The beaches vary, depending on which side of the island they are. The beaches on the eastern side are sheltered but those on the west coast are open to some strong winds. This means that some of Rhodes’ western beaches are perfect for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Like Symi, Rhodes is also one of the island to visit during combined Greek islands and Turkish Coast's blue cruise itinerary by gulet charter, motor yacht charter and catamaran charter.
Rhodes has a busy international airport and ferry port.
